I picked up this book for a geography project on the Carta Marina and couldn t return it without reading the whole thing A delightful voyage through a historical landscape caught up between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance The book ties together ca...

A paper voyage through the sea monster infested waters of Olaus Magnus s 16th century Carta marina A fun book with a great layout The inside of the dustjacket folds out into a reproduction of the map, but since I borrowed my copy from a library...

Finally focused on it long enough to finish This feels like a reference book than anything, so it definitely got tedious I have a plethora of new resources to check out, though, and I was able to take a lot of notes on different sea monsters and their traits and some of their allegorical purposes.

Today s post is on Sea Monsters A Voyage Around the World s Most Beguiling Map by Joseph Nigg It is 159 pages long including and index The cover is a picture of the map that the book is about The intended reader is someone who is interested in history, sea monsters, and maps There is no language, no sex, and no violence in this book The story of the map is told in third person There Be Spoilers Ahead. From the dust jacket Smart phones and GPS give us many possible routes to navigate out daily commute, warn us of traffic problems and delays, and tell us where to find a cup of coffee But what if there were sea serpents and giant man eating lobsters waiting just off course if we were to lose our way Would there be an app for that In the sixteenth century, these and other monster were thought to swim the northern water, threatening seafarers who ventured too far from shore Thankfully, Scandinavian mariners had Oluas Magnus, who in 1539 charted these fantastic marine animals in his influential map of the Nor...

3.5 stars, but rounded up to 4 mostly because of the dust jacket folding out into a repro of the Carta Marina The background info on the map overall was excellent, but some of the essays on the creatures did seem a bit stretched for info, vague, or repetitive However, the general history of the entire thing is too awesome not to give really any less than 3.5 stars.Searching and finding all the keys on the overall map was epic fun, and it made me wish that the book focused on all of the keys on all sections of the map, and not just the sea monsters There were some gems on land as well as in the sea My favorite key doesn t have a fancy illustrati...

The Carta Marina is fabulous. This book has good quality reproductions and some interesting information, albeit not the most exciting prose style However, Nigg didn t seem to have enough material to fill a full length hardback there is lots of wasted space, with blank pages and the same details from the map being reproduced multiple times U...

Beautifully illustrated, which is the main point, but the scholarship s not the most insightful ever More depth would be nice, but as a coffee table book it s very nice.
